Utilities stand to gain the greatest benefit from implementing AMI. But the question now is how can utilities leverage their investment in AMI technology for the greatest benefit?

Utilities need to implement tools to assist them in analyzing the storehouse of information that results – a process called ‘data analytics’ – and use their findings to design more effective demand side management programs and marketing strategies that will change customer behaviour. It has thus become essential for utilities to understand how to interpret consumer behaviour data, which although standard practise in the retail sector is uncharted territory for many utilities, and is the key to maximizing the value of the data collected.

It is said that consumers are more likely to react to concrete, personalized data that clearly demonstrates the outcome of their usage decisions. Therefore utilities may opt to design customized rate plans that meet very specific individual customer needs. This will also lead to benefits in the installation of intelligent home appliances that can cycle down or up during peak or off-peak hours, and will offer a win-win for the consumer and the utility.
