Irvine, CA (USA) - October 26, 2005 – Teridian Semiconductor Corp. today announced availability of its MicroPHY transceivers for embedded 10/100 Ethernet applications. The Teridian® MicroPHY® are packaged in an ultra small 5mm x 5mm QFN package, creating the world's smallest Fast Ethernet PHY. The 78Q2123 MicroPHY is targeted at consumer audio-video products, while the 78Q2133 is available for industrial temperature operating range applications. Both transceivers feature Hewlett Packard's "Auto-MDIX" technology.

Teridian Semiconductor Corp.'s MicroPHY transceivers continue a long history for the company in Fast Ethernet PHY products. In 1996, Teridian introduced its then industry- leading low-power Ethernet PHY, targeted specifically for PC Card applications in the notebook computing market. In September 2002, for its 30-year anniversary edition EPN magazine highlighted that original PHY as one of a handful of products that at the time had changed the electronics industry.

An important new feature added to the MicroPHY is Auto-MDIX technology. This feature, which is a must for consumer products, enables the PHY to automatically and internally compensate for straight/cross-over cabling concerns. In addition, the availability of an Industrial Temperature rated 78Q2133 enables the MicroPHY to be used in emerging outdoor and industrial applications.

To achieve its industry leading ultra small size, which is estimated to be 70% smaller in total board space than its nearest competitor, Teridian eliminated many hardware control pins that were present on its previous generation of PHY products. The removed hardware control is replaced with software control via the station management interface. The MicroPHY requires only a single 3.3V supply, maintains the low power Teridian PHY have been known for, and eliminates the need for expensive Tantalum Capacitors.

Pricing and Availability

78Q2123 and 78Q2133 are immediately available for general sampling and volume production. Pricing in 10,000-unit quantities is $1.04 for the 78Q2123 and $1.44 for the 78Q2133 in a RoHS compliant 32-pin QFN package.
