Smart metering for residential customers is one of a number of interventions that have been proposed by the government as part of a National Electricity Emergency Program to alleviate the growing power shortage in South Africa.

With the recent spate of outages, the country is in the midst of its worst ever power crisis, and the smart meter technology would be installed in at least 3 million homes.

At the same time a power rationing plan is being drafted, which should start being implemented from March in order to improve system security and enable initial recovery of power feeding the national grid.
