Ray Gogel has joined smart grid technology provider CURRENT Group, LLC in the new position of president and chief operating officer.
Gogel, most recently held senior executive positions at Xcel Energy Inc., in which he was directly responsible for creating the nation’s first SmartGridCity™ in Boulder, Colorado. SmartGridCity will include approximately 50,000 homes and is a template for smart grid implementation in other cities around the world.
At CURRENT, Gogel will be responsible for all areas of operations, including sales, marketing, product development and management, and information technology. As the company increases its focus on smart grid software services in the U.S. and begins to offer open, standards-based meter reading combined with its smart grid services in Europe and Asia, Gogel will lead the company’s effort to develop and market innovative products and services that utilities need to increase their efficiency and capabilities.

Gogel, 59, joined Xcel Energy as chief information officer in 2002, and in 2005 became chief administrative officer and vice president customer and enterprise services, where he was responsible for information technology, customer care and revenue cycle, human resources and utility innovations. From 1999 to 2002, he was vice president and senior client services principal for the utilities practice at IBM Global Services and also held consulting positions at IBM, where he helped start its Business Process Management practice. Prior to joining IBM in 1996, he spent 20 years in increasingly senior executive positions at Public Service Electric & Gas in New Jersey. He received his doctorate and master's degrees from Drew University.
