Manuel Zelaya, President of Honduras, inaugurated his country’s AMI deployment in the city of San Pedro Sula in May.

The AMI project, being carried out by Empresa Nacional de Energia Electrica (ENEE) with the aim of reducing nontechnical losses and increasing revenues, is using Elster’s EnergyAxis System.

ENEE began installation of the EnergyAxis System and 21,000 REX-D meters in December 2006 in San Pedro Sula, Honduras’s second largest city, which accounts for approximately 60 percent of the electricity sold by the utility and 70 percent of its revenue. There are plans to install more meters in some of the other main cities in the country in the near future.

One of the drivers for ENEE’s AMI project was the reduction of non-technical losses and improvement in cash flow through early tamper detection and remote disconnection for problem accounts. Prior to the start of the project, non-technical losses were averaging 25 percent countrywide, with a value of US$60 million. The expectations are that the AMI will help to reduce the losses to less than 10 percent by the end of 2007.
