Paul de Martini, former chief technology officer and vice president, innovation, at Cisco, has joined the new consultancy Newport Consulting Group.

De Martini is managing director of Newport Consulting, which leverages his over 20 years’ project and program management experience to “help clients develop and execute successful strategies to benefit from energy industry transformation,” according to the company’s website.

Among this are Southern California Edison’s smart grid and SmartConnect AMI projects, which de Martini led as the company’s vice president of advanced technology. He left SCE to join Cisco in May 2010.

Newport Consulting’s website lists partnerships with Cisco, ICF International, California Institute of Technology, TomKat Center for Sustainable Energy, Enernex and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), and advisories with Tendril, Power Assure and Ambature.

Services offered include strategy and business architecture, market development, technology management, and program management.

Other activities in which de Martini is involved include membership of the European Commission’s 2035 Strategic Research Advisory Committee, MIT Future of the Grid Advisory Committee, and EPRI’s Intelligrid Advisory Council.

He holds an MBA from the University of Southern California, a BS from the University of San Francisco, and has completed the technology management program at the California Institute of Technology and the project management program at UC Berkeley.
