The meter has moved from a position of relative unimportance some years ago to one of critical importance within the utility chain. This change has been rapid and dramatic and has been driven by different factors in different regions. These include deregulation and competition, privatization, technological advances and an increased focus on the need for accurate and reliable data throughout the utility delivery process. There is a clear understanding that the meter and the underlying information technology back-end systems play central roles in assuring the utility revenue stream and consequently its survival.
