João Torres, CEO of the Portuguese distribution company EDP Distribução, has been elected as the new chairman of the European electricity distributors’ association, EDSO for Smart Grids.
He takes over from Livio Gallo, CEO of Enel Distribuzione, who completed three years as chairman, and has taken on the position as an EDSO vice-chairman.
“It is a great honor for me to take on the chairmanship of EDSO,” said Torres. “Europe is facing tremendous challenges in terms of greenhouse gas emissions, renewable energy and energy efficiency – and with the development of smart grids, the DSOs will play a very important role in reaching these ambitious EU objectives.”
At the same general meeting RWE Germany was accepted as a member of EDSO for Smart Grids. With this EDSO now represents around 70% of electricity consumption in the EU.
