Joe Hughes, who manages EPRI’s IntelliGrid™ Architecture and has made several contributions to assist key international standards for advanced automation and customer communications, will present an update on the program at Smart Metering West Coast 2008.
EPRI's IntelliGrid™ initiative is creating a technical foundation for a smart power grid that links electricity with communications and computer control to achieve tremendous gains in reliability, capacity, and customer services. A major early product is the IntelliGrid Architecture, an open standards, requirements-based approach for integrating data networks and equipment that enables interoperability between products and systems. This program provides utilities with the methodology, tools and recommendations for standards and technologies when implementing systems such as advanced metering, distribution automation, demand response, and wide-area measurement. The program also provides utilities with independent, unbiased testing of technologies and vendor products.
Joe Hughes has over 25 years experience in the utility industry, including 20 years at Pacific Gas and Electric, three years consulting and seven years at EPRI. His experience ranges from transmission and distribution automation through to metering and customer communications, and he has managed a variety of research and development projects on advanced utility automation communications infrastructure. At present, Hughes is a senior technical manager for power delivery system technologies in the Power Delivery Science and Technology Development Division at EPRI.
Smart Metering West Coast will take place August 18–19, 2008 in Seattle, WA.
Topic highlights for Smart Metering West Coast 2008 include:

- investigating the strategies, standards and systems behind smart meter data management
