One of the main advantages of DLMS/COSEM is the proper separation of

user data to be transported, and the protocol transporting this data. This has made it easy to cover all energy types/media. Gas is the focus of interest right now.

Gas meters are becoming complex: the market is moving from volume measurement to energy measurement. There is an urgent need to identify a lot of parameters unambiguously, for example gas properties. DLMS/ COSEM has been evaluated as it fulfils these needs.

A co-operation has been established between DVGW (Deutsche Vereinigung des Gas- und Wasserfaches e.V. - German Technical and Scientific Association for Gas and Water) and the DLMS UA. Both are now associated members in each other’s organisation.

User data is largely defined in OBIS, the OBject Identification System. The OBIS codes to be defined will also be used for data identification in EDIFACT messages to ensure a transparent data chain. EN 13757 already specifies a lot of gas OBIS codes, and these have to be further extended, keeping upwards compatibility.

The scope of the ongoing cooperation with DVGW is:

  • Definition of new OBIS codes
  • Handling status information (metering and processing)
  • Data security.

Working groups define the details in meetings or via e-mail. Other large gas organisations have also expressed their interest.

A need for simple residential devices has also been identified, mainly in the electricity field. Working groups in multiple countries are gathering information and collecting ideas – buzzwords like “DLMS LIGHT” are created. The DLMS UA is ready to extend the DLMS/COSEM specification, with a view to co-operation with International Standardisation though its cooperation partners CEN TC 294 and IEC TC 13.
