energywatch, the independent watchdog for the UK energy industry, has hired consultants to investigate the online practices of nine companies it has licensed to offer information to customers wanting to switch to another energy supplier. The companies are not officially linked to any utilities; rather they acquire their income via a commission paid by an energy utility if they are able to persuade a customer to switch to that particular utility.

The consultants will examine whether the energy price companies’ web sites are offering up-to-date and accurate information, and are providing the best advice to the 50,000 consumers who switch supplier each week. Thus far there have been no complaints from the public, but energywatch and some utilities have noticed discrepancies on the web sites, which energywatch tests and monitors regularly to ensure they contain accurate information.
