Bert Valdman, senior vice president and chief operating officer of Puget Sound Energy (PSE), has been charged with the keynote address at Smart Metering West Coast 2008.

Valdman is responsible for leading PSE’s strategic initiative to improve its financial profile and enhance investor returns while markedly boosting its capital investment in core utility infrastructure

Since the late 1990’s, PSE has taken advantage of technological innovation in the utility industry, often moving ahead of its competitors. This foresight is vital to an unyielding business strategy to ensure market position and customer satisfaction.

Prior to joining PSE in 2003, Valdman was managing director of investment banking services for JP Morgan’s energy sector clientele. Earlier, he was a member of JP Morgan’s Paris office investment banking team. He also has taught courses in financial analysis and corporate finance at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques in Paris.

Valdman holds a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University, and a master’s degree and PhD from Stanford University. Active in industry and community organizations, he serves on the boards of the Puget Sound Blood Center and the Pacific Northwest Ballet where he currently serves as the board’s treasurer.

Valdman will address the future of the smart utility, touching on pricing programs, the impact of the smart grid, energy efficiency incentives and all encompassing business strategies for utilities moving along with the evolutionary pace of the 21st century.

Smart Metering West Coast will take place August 18–19 in Seattle, WA.

The combination of smart metering and the intelligent grid is transforming the energy landscape for utilities and their customers, with new ways of measuring and managing supply and use across the grid and into homes and businesses. These pioneering technologies will open the way for improved reliability and enhanced operational efficiency. Meet with interstate stakeholders, national industry experts and local utilities to debate the future of smart metering and the smart grid.
