The Connecticut Municipal Electric Energy Cooperative (CMEEC) has partnered with solar energy services company SolarCity for rollout of a solar and storage projects.Through the collaboration, the two partners will build a portfolio of solar plants representing 13MW in power generation and a 1.5MW (6.0 MegaWatt Hours) energy storage system in southern Connecticut.

SolarCity with assistance from solar projects development company Brightfields Developments will install 57,000 panels on the project’s seven sites in Bozrah, Norwich and Groton.

The battery storage to be set in Norwich will be integrated with SolarCity’s energy management technology GridLogic Control to allow CMEEC to remotely dispatch stored energy to manage load spikes and optimise the operational efficiency of the network.

The projects are all expected to be completed by December 2016 and falls under the utility’s efforts to provide cleaner power to its members and consumers in six Connecticut communities including 70,000 metering points.

CMEEC provides services to customers in the cities of Groton and Norwich, the Borough of Jewett City, South Norwalk and East Norwalk and in the Bozrah Light and Power Company service territory.

Solar energy generation in N.America

SolarCity's partnership with the utility cooperative improves the California based solar energy company's footprints in the solar energy business in the region.

In early March, the company unveiled its smart home energy management solution for residential consumers in Hawaii in a bid to maximise solar generation and self-consumption.

In a press statement, SolarCity said its advanced technology integrated portfolio includes solar PV, battery storage, smart electric heaters and the Nest Learning thermostat. [Smart energy firm partners with Texas utility on solar projects].

Furthermore, SolarCity’s gateway will allow coordination of the systems' generation, storage and energy usage stages.

The solution utilises the battery, smart electric water heater and the controllable thermostat to remotely modify energy usage based on the amount of solar energy generated to avoid energy from being exported back to the grid.

During the day, the system makes use of the battery for storage of excess generated solar energy for usage during the night.

At the same time, the smart electric water heater uses the solar PV to heat the water during the day and stores it for usage during the night.
