Shipments of all smart wireless lighting products is expected to reach 400 million by 2019, according to ON World

In the US, a survey conducted by global business intelligence firm, ON World, reveals that smart lighting is the most popular home automation product, adding that one in five consumers are likely to buy an energy efficient LED light    bulb within the next two years.

The online survey conducted with over one thousand adult consumers   in the US showed that smart lighting is the top priority when  considering smart home products.

In addition, ON World found that one in five adult consumers already own or are in the market to purchase a smart wireless LED light bulbs within the next two years.

Says Mareca Hatler, ON World’s research director: “With dozens of available products and costs dropping rapidly, smart lighting has quickly become the most popular smart home application.

“Consumer interest in smart LED light bulbs has increased dramatically and this has benefited smart home automation and control systems providers.”

Increasing demand for smart lighting

The analysis also showed that demand for LED light bulbs is two times higher than other smart home devices such as thermostats and smart household appliances. What’s more is that, according to the survey, twenty-nine per cent of consumers revealed that they would be prepared to pay US$20 more for a smart wireless LED light bulb.

Further research and analysis of 257 smart lighting products and 20,000 consumer reviews, showed, that adoption for smart LED light bulbs increased by 30 times between 2012 and 2014.

Smart lighting communications

According to the global technology research firm, the highest ratio of positive reviews for smart light bulbs, dimmers and products use ZigBee, Z-Wave and Bluetooth communications technologies.

As a result of the growing demand for smart LED light bulbs, ratings for products using ZigBee increased the fastest with 238% more in 2014 compared with 2013.

ON World notes that, although ZigBee currently has the largest market share, the number of Bluetooth smart bulbs is growing faster. It adds that Bluetooth is used in 80% of crowd-funded smart lighting products.

A company statement observes that smart lighting products are also being integrated with sensors and cameras – supporting expanded Internet of Things applications.
