Israeli Iron Dome missile defence technology will  be used to protect the smart grid in New York.

The Israel Times has reported that the Israel-US Bi-national Industrial Research and Development Foundation (BIRD) is providing a US$900,000 grant to help New York Power Authority and mPrest, an Israeli company, to develop software to detect malfunctioning transformers and avoid an escalation along the grid.

Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) will provide research assistance.

Smart grid to enable clean energy push in China

Meanwhile in Asia, China’s efforts to promote the spread of clean energy are being reflected in the design for that country’s smart grid.

According to the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), long distance transmission and active power distribution networks will be built to fully use hydropower, wind and solar.

Grid constraints are hindering China’s renewable energy growth, resulting in some current wind capacity lying idle due to grid issues. This is made worse by the challenge of transporting capacity from where its produced to where its most needed.

The NDRC has revealed that China will accelerate the construction of micro grids and distributed generation projects, which will alleviate the need to rely on the current transmission and distribution grid.

China is heavily investing in its grid infrastructure, with over US$64 billion being spent last year on electricity networks. As more renewable energy sources are brought into the mix, this amount will continue to rise.

China has pledged to produce 20% of its energy needs from renewable and nuclear energy by 2030, and plans to improve flexible control over T&D networks to ensure energy security and stability.

The grid system will also meet demand created from broader use of electric vehicles and energy storage, the agency said.
