In Europe, global energy management company Smappee has launched its Smappee Pro device, designed for small to medium-sized businesses, to perform energy monitoring and allows users to control office tools remotely with the use of mobile devices.

The San Francisco-based company claims that Smappee Pro is the only energy monitoring and control solution for SMMEs.

The device includes clamps attached to incoming power lines and features a web portal taking on the form of a desktop website and app for mobile devices that displays energy usage within an office building.

Smappee Pro used advanced disaggregation algorithms, tracks energy consumption down to the commercial appliance level. The device maps and compares the energy usage at different offices, making it ideal for businesses with multiple locations.

Smappee’s director of global business development, Richard Morgan stated that while energy companies offer monitoring solutions for large companies, an opportunity and gap in the market has been identified for a smart energy device catered to the home and small business sectors.

He adds: “We’ve had a number of those people who are energy managers of small to medium-sized businesses ask us about using the product in that space.”

It was these requests, said Morgan, that prompted the company to “scale up” the home version into the Pro version for businesses.

Empowering businesses through smart energy management

Apart from real-time information into an office/building’s energy flows, the Smappee Pro Web portal and mobile application allows users to see how much energy a building’s lights and HVAC system uses, as well as the corresponding costs that a particular time.

This real-time visibility in turn allows users to spot high-power consuming office appliances and through Smappee’s mobile app, affords data mining tools for managers to compile energy reports, detailing consumption, savings and carbon footprint details.

Business owners are also able to switch lights on and off from any location, using Smappee’s mobile app. The devices also measures solar production, so users know when, where and how much energy is being created in real time.
