Frost & Sullivan have named Silver Spring Networks as the Frost & Sullivan New Zealand Smart Grid Solutions Company of the Year for the second time.

The smart grid technology provider was recognised for it's IPv6 critical infrastructure networking platform.

According to a company release, the technology enabled "energy retailers, distribution companies and Metering Services Providers (MSPs) in New Zealand’s disaggregated market to provide more reliable coverage in varying topographies, give urban and rural customers up-to-date, two-way information on their usage for better energy management and cost efficiencies.

It added that Silver Spring's technology "offers programme flexibility to expand to additional smart grid, smart city, and other critical infrastructure applications in the future."

Silver Spring has worked with Unison Networks, SmartCo and Metrix to offering a variety of services including distribution automation and metering-as-a-service.

The “Milli 5,” a critical infrastructure platform, is a networking card the size of a postage stamp, which can "embed in small, battery-powered IOT devices to create self-meshing, large-scale sensor networks for smart cities, water and gas metering, EV charging, environmental and acoustic sensors, transportation and logistics monitoring, industrial and manufacturing equipment, and agricultural sensors," the company said.

Trimble launches new TMR1 data link

In the US, Trimble launched the new TMR1 data link, "an advanced, software-defined industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) radio band, networked transceiver providing license-free wireless communications around the world."
Offering data links for dual-frequency operations within 902-928 and 865-870 MHz, with throughput up to 2.6 Mbps, and range as high as 70 miles the device is said to offers seamless integration of serial and Ethernet."
Sensors can be installed for continuous SCADA and monitoring applications and is said to be appropriate for industrial control applications including electric utilities, water/wastewater management, machine control for agriculture and construction.
The data link supports both point-to-point and point-to-multipoint network topologies. In addition, it supports multiple speed/modulation pairs within a single network while selecting the optimal speed for each individual remote radio.
This allows for automatically adaptation to changing signal and noise levels, by selecting the highest link rate/modulation pair maintainable for each individual radio link - without forcing the entire network to operate at the speed of the slowest link.
Dual data ports allow for simultaneous communication with both TCP/IP and serial port devices in the same network, while a Web interface allows management across the entire network.
A company release notes that: "all links are protected by Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) data encryption, Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) segregation, password authentication and Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) technology."
