In the US, the Smart Grid Interoperability Panel (SGIP) has expanded its relationship with the Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC) with a view to jointly develop technologies and testbeds to accelerate IoT adoption in the energy sector.

The agreement between the two organisations builds on a Memorandum of Understanding under which SGIP and IIC works together to align IoT architectures and testbed activities.

Other joint activities will include the mapping of IIC’s Industrial Internet Reference Architecture to SGIP’s EnergyIoT architecture – creating the opportunity for mutual engagement.

Industrial Internet Consortium members can participate in EnergyIoT testbeds and SGIP members can participate in new Industrial Internet Consortium testbeds.

The Massachusetts-based institutions have both agreed to conduct a formal review of key energy deliverables. The SGIP and IIC will also identify ways in which members may participate in new and established testbed activities.

Says Sharon Allan, SGIP’s CEO and president: “We believe that IIoT approaches are the future for the energy industry. They can unlock opportunities for distributed intelligence in fielded systems, predictive maintenance, transactive energy marketplaces, and a variety of innovative solutions we haven’t even thought of yet.

“The IIC is the perfect partner to ensure the energy industry achieves IoT interoperability within our own industry and can realise even greater interoperability opportunities outside our industry.”

Creating a standardised approach to IoT

According to a statement, the Industrial Internet Consortium said its Industrial Internet Reference Architecture released in 2015 provides a common approach for Industrial Internet systems and steers the design of IIC testbeds, as well as the control and communication testbed for microgrid applications.

It adds that SGIP’s EnergyIoT strategy and its current Open Field Message Bus (OpenFMB) project focuses on the energy industry, with its architecture developed in line with the IIC’s Industrial Internet Reference Architecture.
