US power utilities Eversource and National Grid secured approval from the New Hampshire Site Evaluation Committee (SEC) to upgrade its power networks.The SEC approval allows the two power utilities to invest $129 million to implement the Merrimack Valley Reliability Project (MVRP).
The MVRP includes construction of 24.5 mile 345KV power transmission line between Londonderry city in New Hampshire and Tewksburry city in Massachusetts.
The approval of the project by SEC follows early April’s approval for implementation in Massachusetts by the states’ Department of Public Utilities.
Power transmission and grid reliability
Joe Purington, vice president of electrical operations at Eversource, said: “The Merrimack Valley Reliability Project answers an urgent need to strengthen the area’s electric system and ensure the continued reliable delivery of energy."
The project is expected to help the utility firms ensure grid reliability, meet power demands and improve customer services by ensuring their grid systems are outage free.
Rudy Wynter, president of FERC regulated business at National Grid, added: “This project will strengthen the power grid that underpins the economic vitality and powers the quality of life in the region.”

Eversource is the largest utility in New Hampshire state serving 500,000 consumers in 211 towns and cities.
National Grid serves more than 7 million gas and electric customers in New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
Grid infrastructure upgrades
In late September, National Grid submitted its proposals with the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities to expand its clean energy generation portfolio.
The power company said it aims to ensure it is able to meet its power demand by implementing the projects including the development of 14MW solar plant in Everett.
In addition to developing the system, National Grid will also install a 605KW energy storage system to store energy generated by the plant and provide it into the grid network during peak periods.
The utility firm is also planning to test new technologies related with solar energy generation including advanced inveters to improve its customer services. [National Grid selects Itron for infrastructure upgrade].
The development of the solar plant will increase the company’s solar generation portfolio in Massachusetts to 21MW.
The utility’s plans falls under its efforts to reduce carbon emissions at the same time ensuring it provides customers with reliable and cheap electricity.
