Ontario’s Energy Conservation Responsibility Act, which features legislation regarding the introduction of smart metering and conservation leadership, has received royal assent. It establishes the legislative framework for the installation of smart metering in all the province’s homes and businesses by 2010, and also contains an amendment that will allow individual metering of condominium units. This will be done through local distribution companies or third party companies, all of which will be licensed by the Ontario Energy Board.

Energy Minister Donna Cansfield says that a conservation culture is vital to Ontario’s future, and that tools like smart metering will give consumers better information and more control over the cost of the electricity they consume.
