In the US, Ohio Edison, a subsidiary of First Energy, is set to complete it's $26 million grid modernisation initiative by the end of this month.

Ohio Edison is replacing 69-kv energy transmission line with modern poles and wires. The system transports electricity to substations in Garrettsville and Newton Falls.

The two substations are also being upgraded to increase energy capacity to meet growing energy demand.

In addition, the installation of new switching devices on the transmission network will enable Ohio Edison to remotely manage and monitor the system in real time.

This will result in quick identification of failures and reduce the duration and occurrence of power outages for consumers in Portage and Trumbull counties.

The initiative is part of the Energizing the Future programme, launched in 2014 by First Energy to modernise the energy transmission systems of its 10 utility subsidiaries.

First Energy operates 24,000iles of energy transmission network which provides electricity to consumers in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, West Virginia, Maryland and New York.

"By rebuilding and modernising an existing line, we can enhance our ability to serve customers while minimizing the project's impact on local communities and the environment," said Randy Frame, regional president, Ohio Edison.

"The new line and remote-control equipment will help strengthen and modernize the grid, and increase the flexibility and redundancy of our system."

Ohio Edison and smart grid investments

First Energy has plans to increase investments in grid modernisation.

Last week, subsidiaries of First Energy in the US state of Ohio filed a smart grid proposal with the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio.

Ohio Edison, Cleveland Electric illuminating and Toledo Edison are planning to spend $450 million in modernising energy distribution networks over a period of three years.
