The New York Power Authority (NYPA) has selected GE to digitise its operations.According to a statement, the NYPA will use a variety of technologies and professional services developed and provided by the US-based multinational conglomerate to digitise the operations and management of its 16 energy generation facilities and 1,400 miles of energy transmission lines.
In 2016, NYPA selected GE’s Asset Performance Management software to improve the smartness and resiliency of its energy generation and transmission infrastructure under efforts to quickly detect and reduce the occurrence of power outages.
Under the new deal, “GE’s application development platform Predix will become NYPA’s Industrial IoT platform of choice.”
Software developed using the Predix platform will be deployed by NYPA to develop a dashboard which the utility will use to monitor, in real-time, the operations of fossil and hydro-electric fuelled powered energy generators. The dashboard will be at NYPA’s Smart Operations Center in White Plains.
NYPA and building energy management
The agreement will cover the use of digital solutions to improve energy efficiency in more than 1,000 buildings monitored by NYPA across the entire state. NYPA says it will use digital solutions developed by Current, an energy management subsidiary of GE, to improve energy efficiency in buildings connected to the New York Energy Manager.
The Authority will employ Current’s software AllSites to provide owners and operators of buildings with real time- energy usage data and recommendations they can use to optimise the operations of their buildings.
Moreover, Current’s CityIQ Intelligent sensor nodes will be connected with NYPA’s streetlights under multiple smart city pilots.
The aim behind digitising its operations and services is for the NYPA to reduce operational efficiency, improve the reliability of its energy network and to reduce its carbon footprint.
The move will help the NYPA to improve customer services to its municipal customers by keeping its energy affordable.
