In Europe, Norwegian utilities consortium Fredrikstad Energi has this week engaged in a contract with Danish smart metering solutions provider Kamstrup to supply an Automated Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system.

According to a press statement, Fredrikstad Nett, Follo netvaerk and Askoy Nett have selected Kamstrup’s smart grid platform OMNIA for an AMI rollout in the utilities’ three supply areas.

The deal includes Kamstrup supplying 85,000 smart electricity meters beginning in 2016 through to 2018 starting with between 1,000 to 2,000 units for a pilot in Q2 of 2016.

Fredrikstad says the outcome of the pilot will determine the programme for the final AMI rollout expected to start in the Q3 of 2016.

Commenting on the contract, Eilert Henriksen, manager at Fredrikstad, said the consortium selected the Danish smart solutions provider because: “In addition to a competitive price, Kamstrup is characterised by a professional project organisation, taking responsibility of the delivery.”

Mr Henriksen added Fredrikstad will be able to optimize energy supply and create an even better economic business that will benefit its 90,000 consumers in Norway's seven municipalities and four counties.

Kamstrup in Europe's ami rollout projects

The news comes as Kamstrup is increasing its presence in Europe's smart metering market.

In October, Itron and Kamstrup released news about their new consortium.

Metering & Smart Energy International reported the two formed a metering alliance to meet Austrian industry requirements for energy companies to select technology from multiple meter suppliers.

By combining Kamstrup's Omnipower smart meter with Itron's OpenWay Riva communications module, the companies claim that utilities can deploy a single network that incorporates radio frequency (RF) and power line carrier (PLC).

Meanwhile, in other smart meter news, US county Bastrop city has this week announced it has completed implementation of an AMI rollout project.

According to a local publication, Batsrop has finished installation of some 2,700 smart electric meters to business and residential metering points as well as installation of 3,200 smart water meters.

Tracey Moffett, Bastrop’s supervisor of utility customer service, said: “We’re able to have a pro-active approach as the system now allows evaluation of reports weekly, reviewing water meters that are reflecting higher than average consumption – which may be insightful of a leak on the customer’s side of the water lines."
