Two new tools have been released for demand response professionals – the OpenADR 2.0b Profile Specification from the OpenADR Alliance, and Demand Response 2.0: A Future of Customer Response from the Association for Demand Response & Smart Grid (ADS).

The OpenADR 2.0b Profile Specification is a full feature specification for complex energy management solutions supporting demand response and distributed energy resource management for both wholesale and retail programs.

OpenADR 2.0b builds upon the OpenADR 2.0a Profile Specification, which was released in August 2012 for simple devices such as thermostats, and adds enhanced demand response event and price scheduling, robust reporting services, and a number of operational and administrative updates to simplify customer participation management and system registration. The 2.0b enhancements enable independent system operators, utilities and aggregators to better monitor curtailment levels among demand response event participants.

“This enhanced specification comes at an ideal time, as an increasing number of utilities worldwide are recognizing the benefits that automated demand response programs offer them and energy customers – better management of peak energy demands, decreased costs and potentially lower overall energy usage,” commented Rolf Bienert, technical director of the OpenADR Alliance.

The DR 2.0 tool identifies and explores the past, present and future of demand response, with the aim to help educate demand response policymakers and stakeholders and stimulate discussion within the broader demand response and smart grid community.

DR 2.0 forms part of the U.S. Department of Energy and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s June 2010 national action plan on demand response. The report discusses factors that are stimulating an evolution from traditional demand response to DR 2.0, which incorporates flexible distributed energy resources. It also provides resources for demand response practitioners and policymakers, including an overview of five key issues to monitor (i.e. power system service definitions and performance requirements, enabling technology investments, revenue availability and monetization, market access, customer adoption and engagement) and a decision-maker checklist.
