Nevada Power Co. has obtained regulatory approval for a trial programme which will allow customers to test the benefits of prepayment meters. The trial will begin as a pilot project with 100 customers using the new meters – 50 of them employees of the utility.

The main objective of introducing prepayment is to improve revenue collection, with energy conservation as a secondary consideration. Nevada Power introduced time-of-use rates last year, to encourage customers to shift some of their power use to off-peak periods, and the utility has been asked to consider combining the prepayment programme with time-of-use rates.
