Long Island, NY, U.S.A. --- (METERING.COM) --- June 24, 2008 – The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) has announced it will begin trials of smart meters; involving a few thousand homes and businesses, the trials will establish the meters’ ability to aid conservation and energy efficiency efforts.

The pilot project will start later this year, and will run for several months. This will allow LIPA to measure how successful the meters are in reducing energy consumption, and in creating an awareness of energy usage and how to conserve it. If the trials are successful the meters will be rolled out to a greater number of LIPA customers from 2009. LIPA has close to one million customers, but full deployment is expected to take years to achieve.

The meters will enable two-way communication between the utility and those customers involved in the trial. The utility plans to send messages to customers informing them of real-time energy prices and the cost of using inessential appliances during peak hours, in an effort to reduce demand.
