Itron is one of several companies assisting cities to become smarter through the Smart Cities Readiness Guide published by the Smart Cities Council. The framework, which is available for the first time in a web-based format, is a collaborative and comprehensive framework for a smart city, against which cities can assess their readiness to innovate – identifying a path, taking next steps and measuring their progress, said the Smart Cities Council.
The framework is purposed to help government leaders to enhance the livability, workability and sustainability of cities, says a company release.
Featured in the Smart Cities Readiness Guide is Itron’s work with initiatives such as Envision Charlotte, and Tianjin Eco-City, a flagship collaborative project between Singapore and China, as well as utilities such as Glendale Water & Power. Itron is one of several contributors to the guide including S&C Electric Company.
The technology and services giant has also provided its knowledge and expertise in the creation and development of the Readiness Guide’s chapters on energy, water, built environment and universal targets.
Evaluating potential for smart cities
Designed for use by mayors, city managers, urban planners and their staff, the guide serves as “objective, vendor-neutral information to help cities make confident, educated choices about the technologies they can use to transform their city,” adds the release.
Spokane, a city in Washington State has used the Smart Cities Readiness Guide to inform its smart city vision.
The latest version on the guide, updated in August 2015, provides users with easier access to more than 200 case studies helping cities address the challenges of rapid urbanization, aging infrastructure, climate change and strong economic competition.
[quote] Originally released in 2013 as a downloadable PDF, the guide has become the framework for Smart Cities Readiness Workshops, a programme that provides hand-on guidance to cities to create their individual roadmap.
Russ Vanos, Itron vice president of sales and marketing for global software, services and smart cities, said in a statement: “The Smart Cities Council is playing an important role in enabling smarter cities, and it has done a tremendous job bringing together the world’s leading smart city practitioners to ensure the Readiness Guide best serves cities as they consider their smart city visions.”
