Chicago, IL, U.S.A. --- (METERING.COM) --- June 4, 2008 – Customers of ComEd are bracing themselves for an increase in their monthly energy bills, to pay for the introduction of smart grid technology. The utility has mentioned a monthly additional charge of $3 per customer.

President and COO Barry Mitchell has pointed out the benefits of smart grids, including early detection of outages, two-way communication between the utility and the customer, the availability of real-time data so that consumers can make energy-efficient decisions regarding usage, and self-healing networks.

ComEd has approached the Illinois Commerce Commission for permission to start implementing smart grid technology. It is probable that consultation meetings with councilors and residents will be held before such approval is forthcoming, however, with members of watchdog body the Citizens Utility Board questioning the need for the surcharge.
