Metering.com highlights some of the noteworthy headlines in the Internet of Things this past week: Kepco and LGU+ sign MoU to develop Internet of Things (IoT) tech, Symantec and venture capital firm partner on security and the Malaysian government launches an IoT roadmap.

Malaysia’s Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation and its applied research agency, MIMOS have launched a nation-wide Internet of Things roadmap that will serve as a guideline for IoT deployment.

The Malaysian town of Cyberjaya, situated about 50 km south of the capital, Kuala Lumpur, will be developed as the model city where Internet of Things deployments will be concentrated and will serve as an example for further IoT implementation in other parts of the country.

Cyberjaya will implement various Internet of Things based solutions such as smart traffic management system and public safety monitoring, energy management, among many others, which can be enhanced and rolled out at a larger scale at a later stage.

Symantec and Frost Data Capital partner on security

US IT security giant Symantec Corporation has announced its partnership with venture capital firm Frost Data Capital – who will together develop an incubator for start-up companies, focusing on cybersecurity analytics, Big Data and Internet of Things (IoT) security.

The Silicon Valley Business Journal reports that Symantec plans on creating up to 10 security and Internet of Things analytics start-ups in the first year of its incubator programme.

The two companies will seek consultation form their biggest clients, brainstorming ideas for solutions to their most pressing challenges and then find the right people to follow through on these ideas.

Critical services and infrastructure such as manufacturing, transportation, energy, finance, healthcare and the challenges faced across these verticals, are representative of where most R&D efforts will be focused.

Research conducted by Symantec revealed that cyber-attackers are bypassing and outpacing defence systems that are designed to secure sensitive meter data management systems, for example.

The company adds that hackers are leveraging legitimate technology, like enterprise software and corporate management tools, as well as like connected devices to carry out attacks.

KEPCO and LGU+ partner on IoT for smart grid

The Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) has signed a MoU with South Korean telecommunications and mobile phone operator LGU+ to develop next-generation smart grid business models by creating synergies between electricity and Internet of Things technologies.

The announcement was made at the launch of the Power-IoT Convergence Center, part of  'Bitgaram energy valley', a Glocal (Global+Local) Energy Cluster that KEPCO is driving forward.

According to Business Korea, the two companies will work together to “improve the energy efficiency of buildings based on Internet of Things technology, provide power consumption information through IPTV in real time and develop a real-time electric power facility safety monitoring solution based on LTE technology.”

KEPCO and LGU+ will also work together to secure the security system of AMI communications networks and Internet of Things-based electric power facilities, as well as develop smart grid business models for industrial complexes.
