The Simplicity Studio platform, through its Energy Profiler, enables developers to benchmark the energy efficiency of Internet of Things system designs

In the US, Texas-based semiconductor company Silicon Labs has launched its Simplicity Studio, an Internet of Things development platform designed to make IoT system design simpler, quicker and more productive.

The Internet of Things platform features an enhanced real-time Energy Profiler tool that helps developers optimise their Internet of Things designs for ultra-low energy and long battery life battery applications, such as with gas and water meters.

The Energy Profiler Tool extrapolates system-level energy consumption and battery life expectations from MCU and wireless IC data sheets through an intuitive user interface for improved usability and greater energy profiling accuracy and reliability.

Optimising energy consumption

According its website, Silicon Labs states that the Energy Profiler affords developers a unique Energy Score feature, enabling them to benchmark the energy efficiency of their Internet of Things system designs.

The Energy Score helps developers determine which design iteration provides the highest score directly correlated to battery life.

A higher score (on a 0 to 10 scale) indicates lower energy consumption and longer battery life.

Energy Profiler also features an enhanced graphing capability allowing developers to visualize the details of energy consumption with greater precision.

In addition, the energy profiler provides a “direct correlation between the energy graph, function analyzer and application code,” says a company statement.

It adds that this three-way correlation capability greatly enhances the ability to optimise a design for ultra-low energy consumption.

Daniel Cooley, vice president and general manager of MCU and wireless products at Silicon Labs said: “Today’s developers not only require ‘faster, smaller, cheaper’ silicon from their semiconductor suppliers, they also expect continuous enhancements in development ecosystems to help them reduce energy consumption and speed time to market.”
