American Electric Power (AEP) has adopted DB Microware's FieldNet® system for utility-wide deployment, which the utility plans to have completed by June 2004. AEP's system is primarily designed for meter reading, and runs on DAP Technologies' Windows® CE 5320 rugged handheld computers. When completed, the FieldNet system will consist of 1000 handhelds deployed across all 11 states of AEP's operations.

DB Microware is a subsidiary of Neptune Technology Group Inc. Its FieldNet system is an integrated route control, meter reading and automated service order software. AEP notes that the flexibility of report design and data extract offered by the Windows-based technology will enable it to better manage the meter reading process.
