Knoxville, TN, U.S.A. --- (METERING.COM) --- November 23, 2011 - Hawaii Electric Company (HECO) has become the latest company to join the EPRI Smart Grid Demonstration project as a member and a host site.

Hawaii acknowledges it must transition to a more independent economy and increase its energy security by using more indigenous renewable resources such as solar, wind, waste-to-energy, geothermal, and wave technologies. In 2009, renewable resources accounted for 9.5 percent of electricity sales in Hawaii. However, the percentage of renewables will continue to increase due to Hawaii"Ÿs extremely aggressive Renewable Portfolio Standards and Energy Efficiency Portfolio Standards. To reach a goal of 70 percent clean energy by 2030, Hawaii also recognizes the need to push for new technologies and be prepared to respond to reliability issues inherent in adding such large amounts of distributed renewable generation on an isolated island electric system.

Key issues facing grids in Hawaii include balancing and frequency regulation, ride-through and anti-islanding, reserve requirements, and handling of periods of excess energy.

Demonstrations at HECO include wind, PV, micro-DMS, smart inverters, and EV charging stations and more.

In other project news the strategic topics that have been selected, where additional focus will be applied during 2012 are:

  • Advanced applications integrating distributed energy resources, including the impacts of and requirements for advanced distributed energy resource management system (DERMS) applications, and the data required and methodology for cost-benefit analysis
  • OMS/DMS integration with AMI systems and DERMS, including examination of architectures being implemented to support various control authorities, development of a UML model and messaging for DER, and monetization of DER benefits
  • Cyber security for DER related field equipment, including a field equipment cyber security risk assessment plan for smart grid deployments, and a security test and evaluation plan and overall cyber and physical strategy for substation and DER related field equipment.
