demand response

Texas Retail electricity provider Gexa Energy launched a new portfolio of programmes to help its commercial consumers reduce their energy consumption and bills. The new online demand response (DR) portfolio, ControlComm, uses AutoGrid’s DR Optimization and Management System to assist the utility’s customers in the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT).

ERCOT operates the electric grid and manages the deregulated market for 75% of the state.

Consumers participating in the initiative, have an option to either use an automated solution or manually reduce their usage during peak demand periods.

Customers who choose to automatically reduce their consumption can connect their appliances and systems including HVAC, building management systems and lighting systems with the online DR technology.

Demand response programmes

The portfolio is made up of three DR programmes namely the Emergency Response Service (ERS), Real-Time Price Response (RTPR) and the 4 Coincident Peak (4CP).

[quote] In the ERS, ERCOT will notify participating consumers with smart meters and using above 100KW when a DR event will occur. The participants will be paid for reducing their consumption and supporting grid stability during the announced peak events.

In the RTPR, Gexa Energy will pay customers on a fixed price product for reducing their energy consumption during peak demand periods above 1 hour. [US utility signs AutoGrid to improve demand response].

In a press statement, Gexa Energy wrote: “The 4CP program enables participants to lower their energy bills by reducing electric usage during any or all of the four 15-minute ERCOT peak events that occur in June, July, August, and September.”

Customers who reduce their consumption during the 4CP will reduce their transmission cost of service charges the following year.

Dr. Amit Narayan, CEO of AutoGrid. “With these new programs, Gexa Energy will be able to provide personalized services to their customers, increase their profitability, and forge stronger long-term relationships with them.”

In addition, the ControlComm solution is said to provide customers with the ability to analyse historical and interval energy data as well as delivering them personalized notifications on cost-savings opportunities via email or the ControlComm customer portal.
