Global provider of embedded processing solutions Freescale has introduced a new set of microcontrollers with secure integrated communications designed for home automation and industrial control devices in the Internet of Things.

The new multi-control chips form part of its Kinetis microcontroller (MCU) family, which is able to deliver a high level of integrated security, the company claims.

Freescale’s Emmanuel Sambuis, director of MCUs for Freescale’s microcontroller group said: “We’re having a convergence between our microcontrollers and connectivity devices. In the [Internet of Things] market there is an absolute requirement.”

According to a company statement, the Kinetis K8x MCU family features three integrated circuits (ICs) including the main processor, a security co-processor to perform cryptographic functions, and in some cases an IC for physical tamper protection.

Multiple functionalities on a single device

The microcontroller is said to perform all these functions in a single MCU for increased cost savings, reduction in size and decreased energy consumption. The Texas-based semiconductor manufacturer highlights the secure nature of the MCU in bringing the Internet of Things to various applications, such as smart energy gateways, home automation and building controls, portable healthcare devices and wearables.

Steve Tateosian, director of Microcontroller Platforms for Freescale’s Microcontroller group, added: “Broad market MCUs are the critical enablers of innovative new end-node applications, and for the [Internet of Things] to evolve, these MCUs must enable highly securable product designs."

He added that the company would continue to evolve its portfolio of security features for products based on Kinetis MCUs, and align its K8x MCU family to tackle future Internet of Things security challenges.
