Dominion Energy has awarded non-profit organisations and government departments for the success of the utility’s EnergyShare initiative.The awards recognise the role played by the organisations toward the success of the initiative over the past thirty-five years.

Dominion Energy recognised the United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg and the Salvation Army with Sustaining Partner awards. The two non-profit organisations partnered with Dominion Energy in launching and administering the EnergyShare programme.

Through EnergyShare, the energy provider helps low-income customers to pay energy bills.

The programme helps consumers reduce energy usage and costs through energy efficiency upgrades in their households.

The Virginia Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services, Department for Veterans Services and the Department of Housing and Community Development received Eva Teig Hardy Community Transformation Award.

The awards were for partnering with Dominion Energy in helping veterans, elderly people, homeless people and disabled people through the EnergyShare programme and other initiatives.

Benefits of EnergyShare

The EnergyShare programme has helped more than 800,000 households in Virginia to pay their bills and become energy efficient since 1982.

In 2015, the utility invested $42 million towards expanding the EnergyShare initiative following a mandate to do so by Governor Terry McAuliffe.

Moreover, the implementation of Senate Bill 1349 paved waeey for an increase in utilities’ investments toward programmes aimed at improving consumer energy efficiency. This resulted in Dominion Energy assisting 4,400 veterans and physically challenged customers through the initiative in 2015.

In total, 18,800 households had energy efficiency upgrades and 35,000 customers including 2,100 veterans and 2,300 disabled people have been assisted since the launch of the EnergyShare programme.

Dominion Energy and its partners have hosted some 700 community outreach events on energy efficiency since 1982.

Recently, the programme has helped reduce consumer energy consumption by 7.5%. [Dominion Energy to refund overcharged customers]

"We now work with nearly 100 intake agencies and other partners to provide this assistance."
