Energy providers Con Edison and Orange & Rockland Utilities partnered with Gridbright to integrate outage management and smart meter systems.According to a statement, the two utilities selected Gridbright to integrate their existing outage management system and advanced metering infrastructure developed by Oracle and Silver Spring Networks respectively.

The integration of the outage management system and the advanced metering infrastructure will allow real-time smart meter data to be used by the two utility firms in the outage identification and power restoration processes.

Commenting on the development, Thomas Langlois, project manager at Con Edison said the project will help improve customer service and operational excellence.

“This effort is the first phase of the multi-year OMS integration project that will roll out in 2018 to coincide with the ongoing multi-year deployment of smart meters under Con Edison's AMI project,” says a company statement.

Clean energy, outage management and grid stability

The move to integrate the utility's AMI and outage management systems follow the implementation of a number of measures by the energy provider to secure its energy supply, meet peak demand, ensure it has fewer power outages and keep the energy bills for consumers within its distribution network affordable.

Con Edison is striving to expand its portfolios of demand-side management and renewable energy resources to stabilise its grid network.

In early August, the company announced that it is set to begin deploying a solar energy pilot project to provide low-income consumers with affordable energy.

In a statement, the utility said it secured an approval from the New York State Public Service Commission to install solar panels on the company’s premises and building rooftops in Brooklyn, Queens and Westchester County service territories.

The first phase of the pilot is expected to cost $10 million and will include the installation of solar panels to generate 3MW of energy capacity to serve between 800 and 1,600 consumers registered under the company’s low-income bill assistance programme. Read more...
