In Canada, the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Economic Development is partnering with the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) on an energy efficiency pilot.
The pilot includes the use of micro-combined heat and power technologies to reduce energy use and costs in residential homes.
The trial will include the development of a demonstrational residential home with onsite natural gas-powered energy generation resource, before being expanded to multiple households in western Canada.
The ministry has provided $38,500 for SAIT to purchase equipment required to pilot the micro-CHP technology.
The trial will be conducted in partnership with ATCO Gas and Brookfield Residential.
The heat generated in producing energy will be stored using the micro-CHP technology for use in heating homes, hot water tanks and other applications.
Use of the micro-CHP technology is expected to reduce consumer reliance on the main grid especially during peak periods and help reduce the region’s overall carbon emissions.
