Decatur, IL, U.S.A. --- (METERING.COM) --- March 27, 2007 – U.S. utility AmerenIP, part of Ameren Corp., is introducing an automatic meter reading system for 1.1 million gas and electric customers. The deployment will take place over the next four years, and will cover half the utility’s customer base.

Ameren has recently been exposed to a good deal of criticism for having introduced massive rate hikes, and the utility hopes that the AMR system will improve customer service. Customers are not being asked to pay for the new meters, which are being supplied by Cellnet Technology. Cellnet will operate the data transmission system and CORIX Utilities will handle the meter change-outs.

To start with the utility is targeting areas in its service territory that are densely populated, as well as areas where customers change frequently, such as university towns. AmerenIP expects to improve its billing systems appreciably as a result of the AMR meters.
