US utility AEP Ohio announced that it will assist the city of New Philadelphia to develop and implement a framework for its energy sustainability programmes.AEP Ohio will help New Philadelphia to design and deploy its sustainability projects following the city’s success in reaching its energy efficiency targets, set under the utility’s Energy Savers programme.
For instance, New Philadelphia city will receive a $35,000 energy efficiency incentive from AEP Ohio, for achieving 773 energy efficiency points from September through to December 2016.
Energy efficiency incentive
Joel Day, Mayor of New Philadelphia, said his city will use the $35,000 energy efficiency incentive to replace a portion of the city’s existing streetlights with the latest energy efficient LED streetlights.
Commenting on the development, Michael T. LaScola, coordinator, training and education for AEP Ohio, said: “By participating in Community Energy Savers, residents and businesses in New Philadelphia were able to learn about and take advantage of energy efficiency programs and incentives available through the company.”
Through the Community Energy Savers programme, AEP Ohio partners with city, town and municipal officials to design and implement ways to boost resident’s energy efficiency. Measures include programmes aimed at improving consumer awareness on the benefits of energy efficiency.
AEP Ohio’s energy efficiency initiative falls under efforts by the utility firm to ensure the reliability of its grid network as well as improve its customer service by helping consumers reduce their energy usage and costs.

The news follows an announcement made by the Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (MEEA) that AEP Ohio will receive the forum’s 2016 Inspiring Efficiency through Innovation Award.
MEEA said AEP Ohio will receive the award for its innovative energy efficiency project Advanced Lighting and Controls programme.
Under the Advanced Lighting and Controls programme, AEP Ohio provides its business customers with incentives for them to replace traditional lighting systems with networked and energy efficient models.
The programme aims to help participating customers of AEP Ohio to reduce their lighting energy use by 70%. [Ohio utility announces $2m budget for grid infrastructure projects].
“This is the sixth consecutive year for MEEA to name AEP Ohio as an award recipient and the third straight year the company is receiving an award for innovation. AEP Ohio will receive the award at the MEEA’s annual meeting Feb. 23 in Chicago,” wrote MEEA.
