The ZigBee Alliance has partnered with the EnOcean Alliance to extend the benefits of self-powered energy-havesting products and applications to the global IoT market.The ZigBee Alliance joined 60 member companies at the recently concluded Light + Building 2016 conference in Frankfurt, where it showcased a range of interoperable solutions for home and building automation and lighting.
ZigBee also highlighted its 3.0 solution, which its claims unifies the Internet of Things through standardisations and interoperability at all layers of the network. An Association release adds that the organisation will also “bring the most widely deployed energy-harvesting technology to the 2.4GHz global consumer frequency band through a collaboration with the EnOcean Alliance.”
Mark Walters, vice president of Strategic Development at the Alliance said in a statement: “The ZigBee Alliance is helping to move energy harvesting from specialized industrial and building automation applications to a significantly broader range of new consumer and commercial markets that make use of the global 2.4 GHz frequency band.
“In addition to updating Light + Building attendees on our collaboration with the EnOcean Alliance to significantly expand global energy harvesting opportunities, we will also share the latest news about the growing momentum behind our ZigBee 3.0 solution.”
The Alliance states that as a result of existing its Home Automation and Light Link standards for smart homes and buildings being forward compatible with ZigBee 3.0, there are already several hundred certified devices that are immediately part of the ZigBee 3.0 ecosystem. Also present at the event, was Philips Lighting and Ubisys, a company that provides solutions for consumption metering and energy efficiency.
ZigBee enabled smart thermostat soars
According to a new report by MarketsandMarkets, the ZigBee-enabled smart thermostat market is expected to grow at a CAGR of approximately 67.45% during the period 2016-2020.
[quote] Commonly used to adjust indoor ambient temperatures and humidity levels, the report states that the ZigBee-enabled smart thermostats combine software, sensors, online connectivity, algorithms, and consumer-friendly interfaces to save on energy and promote electricity conservation.
The report attributes the growing demand for energy-efficient heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment will be the key driver for this market. Heating and cooling equipment account for nearly half of the total household energy consumption cost in cold climates.
A release adds that, " ... many residential users have been compelled to seek ways to reduce energy consumption and cut costs. This growing need to reduce energy consumption will lead to the augmented adoption of smart thermostats that feature intelligent sensor systems."
