Nicosia, Cyprus --- (METERING.COM) --- May 28, 2013 - The Photovoltaic Technology Group and the Research Center for Sustainable Energy of the University of Cyprus recently announced the kick-off of a European research project to optimize net metering in the region.

The project, “Promotion of PV energy through net metering optimization” (PV"NET), is aimed at developing better energy policy for the promotion of renewable energies in the Mediterranean countries, targeting the best and most cost efficient use of PV technology. The focus is on the optimization of smart energy management systems in order to create alternative economic and sustainable measures through harmonization and reassessment of existing support schemes including government subsidies and grants.

PV-NET is financed by the European Regional Development Fund through the cross"border program MED, with a total budget of €1.3 million.

The University of Cyprus is the coordinator. Partners include the Cyprus Energy Agency (Cyprus), Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece), University of Maribor (Slovenia), Andalusian Energy Institute (IAT, Spain), Agency for Energy and Environment in Rhone"Alpes (RAEE, France), and the Regional Agency for Energy and Environment in the Algarve (AREAL, Portugal). The project is also supported by the Electricity Authority of Cyprus and Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority and the relevant power and energy authorities in the other participating countries.

Through the implementation of the PV"NET project, net metering schemes will be optimized in each Mediterranean area involved, taking into account local conditions and strategies for energy pricing.

Pilot PV net metering systems will be installed in Cyprus, Slovenia and Portugal on different types of buildings (residential, commercial, industrial, etc.). Data on consumption and tariffs will be studied and compared in order to optimize the models that will be applicable in each region.

The kick-off meeting for PV-NET was held in Cyprus in April.
