Perth, U.K. --- (METERING.COM) --- June 4, 2008 – The UK government is progressively introducing a requirement to provide energy performance certificates for house sales and commercial and rented properties, and utility Scottish and Southern Energy plc is to launch a new nationwide business to provide its customers with these EPCs. SSE believes that ultimately there could be a requirement for up to 7.5 million surveys each year country-wide.
The certificates are commissioned by the property owner or his agent; they state how energy efficient a home is on a scale of A (most efficient) to G (least efficient) and include recommendations on how to improve the home’s energy efficiency. The average property in the UK is in the D or E band.
SSE is recruiting and retaining accredited Domestic Energy Assessors to visit properties, collect the relevant data and create the certificates. They will initially provide the service in south-west England and south Wales, with the service available nationwide during 2009, by which point SSE expects to employ or retain a network of 500 assessors across the country.
In addition to the standard accreditation, SSE’s assessors will have to undertake additional training in health and safety, customer service, and improved survey techniques and care, use and calibration of equipment.

It complements the work we are doing on smart meters and under the Carbon Emissions Reduction Target. It is also in line with our ‘better plan’ package, which gives financial rewards to customers for cutting their energy consumption.
