London, U.K. --- (METERING.COM) --- December 6, 2007 – U.K. cell phone operator T-Mobile believes it is the first company in the country to deploy smart meters, which it has done at 6,000 network sites in an effort to lower electricity bills and improve energy efficiency.

The U.K. government has supported the introduction of smart meters, but as yet has not issued deadlines or guidelines, leading some organizations to suggest that deployment will not take place until more clarity has been reached on several issues. T-Mobile U.K. chief executive Jim Hyde has said that the smart meters allow the company to take better decisions about energy use – in particular helping to identify the most energy efficient equipment and to transfer to the most appropriate energy tariff. It hopes to save close to 10 percent per year on its energy bills as a consequence of the deployment.
