Les Sables d'Olonne, France --- (METERING.COM) --- July 1, 2013 - The Smart Grid Vendée project was launched last week to pilot a range of smart grid technologies in the Pays de la Loire region of France.

The 5-year, €28 million project is intended to develop and test new tools to integrate renewable energy and manage consumption.

In particular the project includes:

  • Implementation of remote sensors in 100 public buildings (town halls, swimming pools, schools, etc.) to strengthen the intelligence and responsiveness of the grid and to help control energy demand
  • Development of innovative software solutions for simulation and forecasting of the status of the grid, and of consumption and production
  • Deployment of network automation to dynamically manage production from renewable sources
  • Creation of tools for decision support and active management of consumption and production.

The project, which is supported with €9.5 million from the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME), is being implemented by a consortium coordinated by the Union Department of Energy of Vendée (SyDEV), which holds the energy competence for the 282 municipalities in the region.

Other members of the consortium are the network operator ERDF, which is the project technical manager, and the telecomms company RTE, energy companies Alstom, Cofely Ineo (GDF Suez) and Legrand, the smart grid technology start-up Actility, and the national arts conservatoire Cnam, which will participate in the project training and social learning.

Smart Grid Vendée is aimed to build on and extend other smart grid pilots in France, including the Venteea project to demonstrate wind energy grid integration and SOGRID which aims to develop a next generation PLC-based integrated chip.
