Smart energy solutions firm Envision has partnered with the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), UK’s national weather service the Met Office and Aarhus University to advance research in renewable energy forecasting.

The four parties will focus on new methods, models and technologies to advance renewable energy forecasting under efforts to increase the accuracy of energy resource assessments.

This in turn will accelerate the adoption of sustainable energy solutions globally and improve the ability of grid networks through improved planning of renewable energy inputs.

The partnership aims to reduce the cost of wind and solar energy.

The four organisations will use existing and new scientific expertise, supercomputing resources, wind and solar generation data, and partner ecosystems in research initiatives.

The first phase of the project is focusing on the use of state-of-the-science data, models, algorithms and supercomputing technologies, to the accuracy of wind and solar power generation forecast.

The second phase will focus on enhanced forecasting services for power grids, e-mobility, and optimised energy management for buildings, industrial microgrids and smart cities.

Erik Andersson, Deputy Director of Forecasts at ECMWF, said “… This research will demonstrate the value of ensemble forecasting and further enhance the use of ECMWF weather forecasts in the renewable energies sector with a positive impact on utilities, grid operators, and most importantly energy consumers.”

Peter Enevoldsen, Assistant Professor at Aarhus University, added: “… It is furthermore expected that this research project will develop and implement state-of-the-art scientific approaches, which will revolutionise the entire energy sector and hopefully inspire future multidisciplinary studies.”
