ENEL will seek to obtain a mobile virtual network operator licence from Italy's Ministry for Economic Development for M2M data transmission

In Europe, electricity and gas distributor ENEL has signed an agreement with Telecom Italia Mobile leveraging machine-to-machine (M2M) capabilities to improve the performance of its data transmission network.

Under the agreement, Telecom Italia Mobile will provide its advanced mobile network for the transmission of electricity meter data from digital meters with the aim of improving the overall performance of its data management processes and optimise related costs.

According to a Telecom Italia Mobile press statement, the systems that Enel will use “are based on the new SIM used in devices that transmit electricity consumption data and will replace existing systems. They will ensure a more effective flow of data, enabling more efficient management of remote metering on the electricity network.”

M2M communication

Telecom Italia Mobile said that the partnership between Enel and the Telecom Italia Group will develop sustainable development models and innovative telecommunications architectures capable of delivering advanced services.

ENEL will also take the necessary steps to obtain the mobile virtual network operator licence from the Ministry for Economic Development for M2M data transmission, as it owns the new SIMs and directly manages their installation.

According to Francesco Starace, chief executive officer and general manager of Enel: “The transmission of billions of bytes of data to Enel’s central system each year makes our distribution network one of the most advanced in the world.

“This agreement … is aimed at improving the internal management of the consumption data of our customers with more innovative and efficient systems.”

Marco Patuano, chief executive officer of Telecom Italia, added: “This agreement further confirms that the major players recognise the quality and reliability of our networks, as well as of our advanced platforms in support of innovative digital development solutions for Italy in the public utilities and smart energy fields".
