The intergovernmental organization promoting the adoption of renewable energy, IRENA, has published a technology roadmap for the deployment of energy storage for clean power.
The document is a manual identifying several priority actions, where IRENA believes that industry and government globally can work together in supporting growth in energy storage.
In order to meet international renewable energy (RE) targets, the roadmap estimates that 150GW of battery storage and 325GW of pumped hydro storage will be needed to accommodate the influx of RE generation.
IRENA director general commented: "Now is the time to think about integrating large scale battery storage into the global energy system.
"This roadmap is a starting point for all policy makers seeking to integrate greater storage capabilities, which is necessary to ensure the world is ready for the next phase of growth for renewable power systems."
REmap 2030 guidelines
‘REmap 2030’ specifies 14 actions across five priority areas, including:
- energy storage to support renewable in islands and remote areas
- consumer-located storage for self-consumption
- generator and grid-located storage for countries with grid infrastructure constraints
- system analysis tools for countries preparing to integrate a higher share of RE into their electrical grid.
- Supportive policies and regulation supporting new business models for storage technology
Areas where policy makers can support industry, the roadmap identifies three factors that can enhance cooperation. This includes the need to create local value chains in remote parts of the world, along with new financing models. Innovative regulation would also be required for generator-located storage.
IRENA’s technology roadmap analyst, Ruud Kempener said: “It’s not that one country or one industry can take this forward – we really have to collaborate. That’s why IRENA has launched this energy storage roadmap, to create the global framework for action; how can we collaborate together to make sure EES is used to its biggest advantage to accelerate the deployment of renewables.”
