Helsinki, Finland and Zug, Switzerland --- (METERING.COM) --- November 22, 2012 - Helen Electricity Network in Finland has completed its smart metering deployment project with Landis+Gyr, seeing the entire Helsinki electricity distribution network move into the smart metering age.

The mass rollout of 200,000 smart meters took just over one year.

“Landis+Gyr was able to provide a solution that meets our needs, integrate it into our existing IT environment and carry out a turnkey project for the smart meters,” said Mika Nousiainen, project manager, AMM projects at Helen Electricity Network. “That was not an easy task, but we managed to do it on time.”

Helen’s customers can begin to enjoy the benefits of smart metering, of which the most significant are changes to their electricity bills to actual and not estimated billing, and more precise reporting of their electricity usage as a whole. Consumers will have access to an on-line reporting tool where, among other information, they can see their consumption broken down into hourly reports.

Helen and Landis+Gyr jointly developed an innovative functionality for dynamic load control of electric heating. The functionality enables automatic control of storage heaters based on day-ahead market prices and the projected demand of heating time in relation to the outside temperature. The smart meter receives daily instructions to control the heater, ensuring that it is switched on when electricity is at its cheapest. This functionality could help end-consumers living in detached houses to save up to €100 on their annual electricity bill without a need to invest in new equipment, or make modifications to their existing electrical appliances.

In the first phase, the advanced functionality is being used for controlling heating in approximately 1,400 households in Helsinki that derive their heat from storage heaters, totaling approximately 40 MW. The same functionality may be used to control other electrical loads in the future, for example electric vehicles.

The package delivered by Landis+Gyr to Helen included smart meters and software, integration management of the Gridstream solution into utility IT systems, project management and rollout support as well as meter reading services for the next 10 years.

Helen Electricity Network is one of the largest distribution system operator companies in Finland, delivering electricity to approximately 350,000 end-users.
