Finland’s Marjamäki industrial district smart grid, LEMENE, is set to receive two combined heat and power (CHP) systems with a total output of 116 kW.

The system will be developed by Convion and manufactured by Elcogen, and will feature the company's next generation solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stacks.

The CHP systems will be integrated into the self-sufficient LEMENE smart grid district energy project which serves consumers in the western municipality of Lempäälä.

The LEMENE project was developed by utility Lempäälän Energia and aims to showcase low-carbon energy generation, energy storage and smart controls.

It is to be powered by a 4 MW solar PV array, an 8 MW biogas engine and a storage battery and is planned to supply power and heat for around 50 businesses in the Marjamäki industrial district.

Lempäälän Energia CEO Toni Laakso said: “The LEMENE smart grid will feature a variety of smart technologies that will respond to changing electric demand, enabled by automation solutions adapted to the microgrid”.

“An important part of the project is to secure energy availability as renewable energy production varies”.

Laakso adds, “In conjunction with the solar array and battery storage, the LEMENE system also required a highly-efficient combined heat and power system from Convion that would convert biogas to generate electricity and heat to supply nearby businesses.”

Convion CEO Erkko Fontell added that the project “shows how Convion fuel cells can be part of future smart grids, where different energy sources and a network of distributed solutions revolutionize how we produce electricity.”

Finland’s Prime Minister Juha Sipilä has called for the country to increase its use of renewable energy to more than 50% by the 2020s, while targeting self-sufficient operations and districts. The LEMENE smart grid launched in the country has taken a huge stride towards these aims.

The project is one of 11 key energy projects to receive a share of €39.7m ($48m) in investment aid from the Finnish Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment.
