Perth, U.K. --- (METERING.COM) --- February 5, 2008 – U.K. energy utility Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) increased its customer base in 2007, while reducing the number of complaints by 22 percent. In the nine months to 31 December 2007 the number of electricity, gas and telecoms customers increased by 650,000 to 8.4 million, making SSE the U.K.’s second largest supplier of electricity and gas.

In the same period the number of customer complaints sent to energy watchdog energywatch for resolution was 495, a fall of 22% compared with the same nine months in 2006.

On 18 January, SSE confirmed that it would keep its electricity and gas prices for domestic customers at their current levels for the rest of this winter and until at least the start of British Summer Time. Its fair pricing policy means that it seeks to be the last, or one of the last, of the energy suppliers to raise prices if it has to and the first, or one of the first, to lower prices if it can. This fair pricing policy has supported ongoing growth in SSE's total customer numbers, which reached 8.5 million earlier this month.

Last month SSE entered into an agreement to acquire Airtricity Holdings Limited – a well established Dublin-based renewable energy company developing and operating wind farms in the UK, Ireland, continental Europe and China and supplying electricity to mainly commercial customers in Ireland. The acquisition is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2008.
